|
||||||||||||||||||||||
The music department is a large and active one, and attracts
students from a wide geographical area, including |
Music Newsletter |
Our accommodation includes:
A large teaching room with full audio and video facilities
A music technology studio with dedicated computers and software
A separate sound recording studio
Dedicated music practice rooms
A large hall with excellent acoustics. This is used for rehearsals, concerts and recordings.
In addition there are large libraries of printed and recorded music – in short, everything to make a student’s time with us stimulating and enjoyable.
We not only have a large number of talented musicians, but we are extremely successful: we enjoy excellent pass rates, and many students continue their musical studies into higher education. For details about courses on offer see music and music technology.
Academic success is underpinned by a wide range of performing opportunities, and excellent facilities incorporating the latest in music technology.
Skills music students develop during their studies include:
Performing on their own and in groups
Aural perception of different musical elements and styles
Writing clearly and analytically about music and its historical context
The ability to write music in their own style and that of others.
Instrumental and vocal lessons are available in college from Dudley Performing Arts, and generous subsidies are available to all students who take part in college musical activities.
Music students at King Edward VI College receive a free 20-minute weekly instrumental or vocal lesson (or a generous subsidy on a longer lesson) in college. For further details see music lessons.
It is important that music students are willing to give time
to performing opportunities outside the classroom. These are many and
varied, and include two choirs, orchestra, wind band and various smaller
groups. For further details see musical
activities.
Musicians give concerts regularly in college and beyond; there are three
major college concerts a year and a carol service in December. . These
activities are open to all students, but music students are required to sing
in the choir and take part as appropriate in other groups.
After College
The department has a long history of sending successful students into higher
education, where we have a number of contacts.
Career opportunities are more varied than you might think, and include
performing, teaching, recording, retailing, arts administration, editing and
publishing.
